Members of the Vermilion County Board on Tuesday night will consider a $24,000 amendment to the animal regulations department’s budget to handle care for several animals in an ongoing abuse and neglect case.
County Board Chairman Larry Baughn said during the Finance Committee meeting last week that the Vermilion County Animal Shelter took in 23 animals in October as part of an ongoing case. He says the owner has not surrendered the animals, but the county is keeping them until the case is settled or the owner agrees to surrender them. Currently, there are 14 chickens, two goats, pigs and reptiles and a dog, horse and miniature horse. Care for the animals is averaging around $3,500 per month.
Shelter Director Kasey Snyder says the proposed budget amendment will fund the animals’ care through May, which is when the next court date is scheduled.
The county board will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday night on the second floor of the Vermilion County Administration Building. The public can also watch via Zoom.
