Local government bodies in Vermilion County will be receiving another round of grants from the Illinois Department of Transportation for road improvements.
Governor J.B. Pritzker announced on Thursday that a third installment of $250 million has been awarded from the Rebuild Illinois capital improvement campaign to address transportation needs. The money is from state bonds and is part of a $1.5 billion overall funding program.
The Vermilion County Highway Department will be receiving $423,000 for roadway improvements, while the City of Danville will get $362,000. City Engineer Sam Cole says the city will use the money for bondable transportation projects, such as the West Williams Street realignment project. Cole says the city will receive a little over $2 million from six total payments.
Passed in 2019, Rebuild Illinois is investing $33.2 billion into the state’s aging transportation system, creating jobs and promoting economic growth. The landmark capital program is not only the largest capital program in state history, but also the first one that touches all modes of transportation: roads and bridges, transit, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
