A Danville man will spend the next decade behind bars for illegally possessing a handgun.
Judge Nancy Fahey sentenced 35-year-old Anthony Powell on Thursday to 10 years in prison for a felony charge of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
Powell was convicted on November 6th of having a weapon during an incident at the Fair Oaks housing complex on March 28, 2020. Officers tried to speak with Powell in the early morning hours at the complex when he ran from them, throwing a handgun and discarding a sweatshirt that he was wearing. Officers recovered the items and DNA testing confirmed the items belonged to Powell. At the time, he was on parole after serving eight years for aggravated battery.
State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy says that Danville Police and the Illinois State Police’s Division of Forensic Services investigated the case. She says weapons offenses will not be tolerated by the county.
