A Fairmount man was one of two people taken to an area hospital after a crash Thursday along Interstate 74 in Champaign County that saw soybeans piled along the eastbound lanes of the highway.
Illinois State Police say that 55-year-old William Emerick was driving westbound on the interstate about three miles east of the University Avenue exit around 10:45 in the morning when he ran off the road, causing the trailer he was pulling to strike a support beam of an overpass. The crash sent soybeans across the eastbound lanes of the interstate.
During the crash, a sand-filled crash barrel struck a Chevrolet Cruze driven by a 23-year-old woman from Schaumburg. Both Emerick and the woman were taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Emerick was cited for improper lane usage.
