Two familiar names in the Danville area closed out their terms as trustees at Danville Area Community College Thursday night.
Longtime trustee and current vice president of the board, optometrist Dr. Ronald Serfoss, and former state representative Bill Black said their goodbyes last night. Serfoss had served 15 years on the board, while Black had served seven years.
Black said after the meeting that serving on the board has been an honor for him, and it has also come full circle, since he worked at DACC as an administrator before running for office, and his family members received degrees there as well.
“When I got out of college and had radical surgery, I needed a three-hour educational theory class just to get a job–any job–back in 1963,” he explains. “This college let me do that.”
Will this be the last elected position Black will hold, after serving as county board chairman, in Springfield and as a Danville alderman? He says he’s not sure about that.
“I’ll be 80 years old in November and it’s probably…I’d like to run again but I don’t know for what, so who knows…,” he remarked.
Trustees also thanked Holley Hambleton, a nursing student from Potomac, for serving as a student trustee for the past two years.
Former student trustee and engineer Dylan Haun, local businessman Maruti Seth and city human resources administrator Sandra Finch are running to replace Black and Serfoss on the board.
