A state police trooper died in a one-vehicle crash Thursday morning in Champaign County.
Authorities say that 45-year-old Senior Master Trooper Todd Hanneken, of Decatur, was driving west in his squad car along Route 10 between Bondville and Champaign around 10:45 Thursday morning when his vehicle left the roadway, hit a utility pole and then struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital about an hour later.
Hanneken received a medal of honor from state police in 2018 after saving the life of an Illinois Department of Transportation employee after a crash on Interstate 57.
Hanneken was a 20-year veteran with the state police. His father is a retired state trooper. Other survivors include his wife and two sons.
