About a year after it was first announced, the Greater Illiana Sports Hall of Fame is set to induct its inaugural class of local athletes.
John Spezia, who is the president of the David S. Palmer Arena board of directors, says that the idea originally came from arena manager Joe Dunagan and will be modeled off of a similar hall of fame in Peoria. Inductees can include teams, individual athletes, coaches and legends, both male and female.
The hall of fame will cover the area of the current Vermilion Valley Conference, stretching from as far north as Milford to as far south as Chrisman, and all of Vermilion County. In Indiana, nominees can come from Fountain, Parke, Vermillion and Warren counties.
A ceremony to recognize this year’s winners will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday via Zoom. The winners will be invited to attend a banquet in their honor that will be held at a later date. Plaques featuring all of the honorees will be located inside the arena in the future.
