The percentage of people testing positive each day for COVID-19 in Vermilion County continues to decline, even though some state officials are worried about a potential rise in new cases.
Vermilion County has only seen 38 new cases in the past six days, which is a change from the almost daily stream of new cases throughout most of 2020. The seven-day rolling positivity rate is now down to 1.3 percent, down more than halfway since March 19th.
County Health Department Administrator Doug Toole says that the new cases include one person in their 80’s, two people in their 70’s, seven people in their 60’s and one-grade-school-aged child. Eight county residents are currently hospitalized and 238 cases are still active.
The health department is currently taking appointments for a clinic that will be held on Wednesday, April 7th at the Fischer Theatre and will be the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, which is a single-dose shot. Residents can sign up by visiting the health department’s website or by calling 217-431-2662, extension 263 or 264. In addition, anyone who received their first dose at Danville Area Community College, St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the Vermilion Regional Airport this month can now sign up for a second-dose appointment.
254 people received a first-dose vaccine during a pop-up clinic at the health department’s building on Monday. A second-dose clinic will be held at the Fischer on Thursday.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reports that 9,946 county residents are fully vaccinated, or about 13 percent of the population.
