Two Holiday Hills residents are competing to represent Ward 6 on the Danville city council in the upcoming election.
Jim Poshard and Allan Shepherd are competing for the seat, which includes their entire subdivision as well as some areas along Winter Avenue.
Poshard, a retired McLane employee who was appointed to the council in December 2019 to replace longtime alderman Steve Nichols, says his main concern right now is trash and litter along city streets, which he says has been improving. Another area that is improving is the crime statistics, and Poshard offers Holiday Hills as an example of that.
“After I became alderman, I asked Chief (Chris) Yates if he could just make his presence known out there by patrol car once and a while, and he did that,” he says. “Honestly, we’ve just not had much trouble or issues out there at all.”
His opponent, Shepherd, is the area manager for Airgas, Inc. and is involved with the American Legion youth baseball league. Shepherd says he would like to run for mayor someday, and says that the city as a whole needs to work with its businesses better than it has in the past.
“We’ve absolutely got to figure out how to entice people to come into our city, to do business in our city and work with them, not against them,” he explains. “Mayor (David) Phillips in Tilton has done an outstanding job in showing us how it’s done.”
Both men agreed that the climate of the state makes it difficult for some businesses to move into Danville. Poshard, who is the president of the Holiday Hills Neighborhood Association, also notes that cleaning up properties would attract businesses since it would show the city cares about its image.
