Although there are seven seats on the Danville City Council being filled today, only five of the races shown on the ballot are contested. But Danville Election Commission Executive Director Sandra Delhaye notes that in Ward 2 – where no candidates filed in time to get their name on the ballot – there are four write-in candidates. Delhaye also says it will likely be Wednesday before the results of that write-in contest are known.
The four write-in candidates seeking to become a Ward 2 alderman are Ronnie Harrier, Carolyn Wands, Jerry Lindquist and David Connolly Jr. On the ballot Ward 2 voters will see the words ‘No Candidate’ listed. But under those words there is a blank where voters can write the name of the write-in candidate they wish to support – then mark the oval next to the name.
Danville Ward 1 alderman Robert Williams and Ward 5 alderman Mike Puhr are running without any opposition.
Both Delhaye and Deputy Vermilion County Clerk Lindsay Light are expecting low turnout today.
As of late Saturday morning, only 252 people had voted early in the Danville Election Commission office. The office had also received 178 ballots from people who voted by mail. Vermilion County Clerk Cathy Jenkins’ office had only received 162 mail-in ballots, and 175 people had voted early in that office.
In addition to the Danville City Council, some other key contests on the ballot Tuesday include ones for Danville Area Community College trustees, school board seats and township races around the county. There are battles for mayor and other board or city council seats in Tilton and Hoopeston, Bismarck and Oakwood trustee races, and a question on whether Bismarck should remain dry (banning the sale of alcoholic beverages). And those are just a few of the things on Tuesday’s ballot. Polls will be open until 7:00 p.m. You can visit VermilionCountyFirst.com or check our social media accounts for a list of winners later in the evening.
