Drivers looking to avoid a train delay in Danville have one less route to choose from.
The city’s public works department shut down the viaduct taking traffic on Seminary Street under the Norfolk Southern Railroad on Monday morning due to structural concerns. Along with barricades, a chain-link fence has been installed at both ends of the viaduct to stop pedestrians from walking through it.
Public Works Director Carl Carpenter says that Seminary Street will be closed to through traffic between Washington and Collett streets. In addition, Junction Street, which parallels the railroad, will be closed from Seminary to Williams Street.
The nearest railroad crossings are at Williams and Main streets, with the closest overpass being Fairchild Street.
Drivers are asked to obey signs and posted detours around the site.
No information has been given about how long the closure might last.
