After more than a decade of outsourcing its sewer and solid waste billing to the Danville Sanitary District, the City of Danville will soon be taking the operation in-house.
Members of the city council’s Public Works Committee on Tuesday night approved a $40,000 contract to a Texas firm, Tyler Technologies, for software that city staff will use to send out sewer and solid waste bills to customers.
City Comptroller Ashlyn Massey says that the city will need to hire two full-time employees to do the work, and there will be a mailing expense. She says the initial cost to start the billing will be more than $200,000 but should save money in the long run.
The software company also has an app called MyCivic that the city could use for general city information and announcements as soon as next year. Massey also says that memos could be attached to bills in order to inform residents about different announcements.
The city will begin its in-house billing at the start of next year. The measure will head to the full city council next week.
