Darren York has officially been certified as the winner of the Ward 7 seat on the Danville City Council, winning by only one vote, 281-280.
The three-member Danville Election Commission board met on Tuesday morning to certify the results. Election Commission Director Sandy Delhaye says that only two absentee ballots have been received since the April 6th election, and neither came from Ward 7.
York, who is a senior rehabilitation counselor with the Illinois Department of Human Services, was appointed to the city council in January by Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. He faced Kaylan Huber, an attorney with the Davis and Delanois law firm in Danville, in the election. York replaced Steve Foster, who resigned in December after serving 27 years on the city council.
Huber can still file for a discovery recount before the end of this week. That process is not uncommon locally. Former alderman Jon Cooper filed for a recount after losing to Aaron Troglia by seven votes in 2019. Dennis Miller also forced a recount after losing by one vote to Lynn Foster in the 2010 race for the Vermilion County Clerk’s office. Neither recount led to any change in the winner.
The other winners in the city council races two weeks ago are Carolyn Wands in Ward 2, Heidi Pertell in Ward 3, Tricia Teague in Ward 4 and Jim Poshard in Ward 6. Longtime Ward 5 Alderman Mike Puhr and Ward 1 Alderman Robert Williams were unopposed in their races.
