The Illinois Department of Transportation says that construction on Interstate 57 at Mattis Avenue in Champaign is resuming this week with nighttime closures to safely place new bridge beams.
The southbound lanes of I-57 will be closed this evening and on Friday night, and the northbound lanes will be closed on Saturday night and Sunday night, weather permitting. The closures will last from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. each night, and detours will be posted. Closures to place new bridge beams on I-74 at Mattis are expected to occur in mid-May.
Funding for the $20 million project is provided by the Rebuild Illinois capital campaign. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area. The bridge replacements are part of a larger project to rebuild the I-57/74 interchange over the next few years.
