It’s been more than two weeks since Danville’s public works department stopped all traffic on Seminary Street from crossing underneath the railroad bridge east of downtown, and officials are still waiting on a portion of the bridge to be repaired.
City Engineer Sam Cole says that CSX railroad personnel have indicated to the city that they hope to have a crew in town to fix their portion of the structure in the next few weeks, although an exact date is not known.
CSX had a crew in Danville on Monday morning to replace a section of track between Bowman Avenue and Griffin Street where several train cars jumped the track on Sunday. The track over Seminary, however, remains the same.
The city closed Seminary Street on April 12th due to gravel making its way through the wooden decking and falling onto the roadway below.
Norfolk Southern officials made repairs within the first few days to their side of the bridge. NS controls three active tracks on the east portion of the bridge, while CSX has an inactive line on the west side.
Cole says that he hopes the situation can be resolved within the next month, although he is not sure when it will actually happen.
