The start of the Danville Dans season is only 27 days away, but the summer collegiate baseball squad is still in need of families to host its players for the upcoming season.
Dans owner Jeanie Cooke says that a majority of players do not have a home base yet for their summer stay.
“We need 32 homes,” she explains. “We actually need 35, with three coaches, but the coaches’ housing has already been secured. We have nine (players’) houses secured, so as you can see, we’re looking for many, many more.”
Cooke says that the players mainly need a place to sleep at night and also a home for meals and other necessities. The Dans play 30 home games and 30 road games during the two-month season, so Cooke says the team will be spending a majority of the time either in practice, playing or traveling. Still, she says the brief experience can lead to lifelong connections.
“What we’ve found out over the years is it makes lasting friends,” Cooke says. “We just had a host family go on a trip south to visit four or five of the players they had kept throughout the years.”
Anyone living in the Danville area who wants to be a host for one or more of the players this season can contact Jeanie Cooke at 217-918-3401 or by emailing dansbaseball1@gmail.com.
