A 21-year-old Danville woman has admitted to her role in the looting that took place following George Floyd’s death in May 2020.
Catarina Rangel pleaded guilty Friday morning before Judge Charlie Hall to criminal damage to property over $500, a Class 4 Felony. The Vermilion County State’s Attorney’s office agreed to dismiss charges of burglary, mob action and looting as part of the plea. The sentence range is between one and three years in prison, although Rangel is eligible for second-chance probation.
Danville police arrested Rangel for a looting incident that occurred at 11:17 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2020, the evening that several other looting incidents occurred in Champaign-Urbana in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Police said that Rangel waited in a car while others looted the Stock and Field store on North Vermilion Street. She drove away in the car when police arrived but was quickly captured.
A co-defendant, Greyson Tibbetts, received probation in January after admitting to a burglary charge in the case.
Rangel will be sentenced on June 16.
