It could still be a while before cars will be allowed to travel through the railroad viaduct on Seminary Street.
Danville City Engineer Sam Cole provided an update on the project for city council members on Tuesday night. He says he does not have a definitive date for when crews from CSX Railroad will repair their section of the structure, although he is hopeful it will be in the next few weeks.
One of the options the railroad might be looking at is removing their portion of the bridge, since the single track on the west side of the structure is no longer in use. The other tracks are owned by Norfolk Southern and are in active use. CSX officials were in Danville on Monday to look over the bridge.
Alderwoman Tricia Teague asked if emergency personnel have any way of accessing the neighborhood east of the bridge without being stopped by trains. Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. said that backup plans are in place if that scenario were to occur.
