A bill sponsored by State Representative Mike Marron that would allow school districts to use federal CARES money to pay for summer school sessions has passed the state House.
Senate Bill 1646 cleared the House by a vote of 110-5 on Thursday. Marron says he heard from a number of superintendents about the need to get students caught back up from what they missed out on due to COVID.
“The parents are requesting summer school,” he says. “The districts want summer school. The teachers want to teach summer school, and they have federal stimulus money available to pay for summer school.
The original bill would require districts to make additional pension contributions for salary increases greater than six percent. An amendment Marron attached to the bill would exclude salary increases from summer school for the next two years.
Marron also says there are many school districts that he represents which have technology and economic resource issues. He says the bill would allow every student in those districts the chance to catch up.
