Daniel Bass often struggled with mental health as a child, and he says it continues to be a problem for him from time to time.
Yet despite those struggles, Bass has managed to achieve quite a bit of success in life, recently being named the president of the student body at Wabash College in Crawfordsville for the next school year.
Bass was a guest on WDAN’s Newsmakers on Monday morning. The 2018 Hoopeston Area High School alumnus says the worst of his struggles happened in his teenage years.
Audio Player“From 7th (grade) to sophomore year, I didn’t have a consistent school basis going on, and that’s when I kind of realized that something’s not right,” he explains. “I knew I was struggling pretty hard. I had actually contemplated a few, too many, times, whether I wanted to be here anymore.”
Bass says that he still struggles with his health despite having a number of accomplishments. He has been an FFA section president in high school, student senate member and also a legislative intern. He says he has used work opportunities to keep himself occupied.
Audio Player“With counseling, (it’s) great for some; my way is trying to find another avenue and kind of seeking it out through my own efforts right now,” he says.
In his position as student president, Bass will oversee the 870 students on campus and its clubs and organizations. He is planning to graduate in May of 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and rhetoric, with a minor in political science.
