A Danville woman has been sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting her brother last fall at Vermilion Garden Apartments.
30-year-old Toi Lewis entered into a guilty plea on Tuesday on a Class X felony charge of aggravated battery with a firearm. She will have to serve at least 85 percent of the sentence, followed by three years of parole once she is released.
Police officers responded to the apartment complex shortly after 2 a.m. on September 19. Security footage showed Lewis walking outside toward a group of individuals in a nearby courtyard. Lewis raised her right hand and aimed a gun at her brother, Major Jones, and then fired several rounds.
Major Jones was hit in the chest and was treated and released from the hospital following the shooting. Witnesses also identified Lewis as the shooter.
Lewis pleaded guilty to a burglary charge in an unrelated case last month and received probation. She also has previous convictions for theft and criminal damage to property in Vermilion County.
