The Danville Dans have scheduled a special celebration on Sunday (June 20th, 2021) as part of this year’s 75th anniversary of Danville Stadium.
It was on June 20, 1947 that the stadium was packed with fans when the Brooklyn Dodgers stopped in Danville. The Dodgers were traveling by train when they stopped in Danville to play an exhibition game. The team defeated their minor league team 14-7 in a game witnessed by over 6,000 fans.
Jackie Robinson had just been called up to the team. Others who played at Danville Stadium that day were Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges and other famous players for the Dodgers.
To commemorate Robinson’s visit to Danville, the city recently designated Highland Boulevard in front of the stadium as honorary Jackie Robinson Way.
The Dans will recall that special day in history with their game against the Cape Catfish this Sunday, June 20th, 2021. Game time is 4:30 p.m., with a pregame ceremony recalling the Brooklyn team’s visit to Danville Stadium.
