As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, Danville Police and other law enforcement agencies are teaming to make sure travelers will be safe. ‘’We want all our residents and visitors to have an enjoyable and safe holiday,’’ said Danville Police Commander Terry McCord. ‘’Remember – if you’re going to drink or use other impaired substances, don’t drive,’’ he added.
Commander McCord says Danville Police have stepped up patrols to keep impaired drivers off the roads and ensure everyone makes it home from their celebrations.
Danville Police have joined Illinois State Police and more than 200 local police and sheriff’s departments – statewide – for the increased enforcement effort.
In order to keep your 4th of July celebrations safe, Commander McCord says you should plan ahead by designating a sober driver. You should also not drive distracted and always wear a seat belt.
Some other holiday safety tips from Danville Police and other departments participating in the holiday enforcement campaign:
- Give your designated driver your keys before you go out.
- If you are drunk or impaired by marijuana or other drugs, call a taxi, take mass transit, or call a friend to get you home safely.
- Use your favorite ride share service.
- If you see a drunk driver, pull over when it is safe to do so, and call 911.
- Make sure everyone in your vehicle wears their seat belt. It is the best defense against an impaired driver.
The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ and ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaigns are funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The campaign runs concurrently with a media campaign which reminds motorists that impaired driving has ‘Life or Death’ consequences.
