New unemployment rates are out and they show an uptick in jobless figures across our region of Illinois. In Vermilion County the June unemployment rate was 7.1 percent compared to 5.8 percent in May of this year. Champaign County’s unemployment rate rose from 4.4 percent in May to 5.8 percent in June.
Vermilion County’s unemployment rate of 7.1 percent in June is down considerably from the COVID-impacted 12.6 percent rate in June of last year.
The new figures are from the Illinois Department of Employment Security and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics – and have not been seasonally adjusted.
The report released Thursday shows unemployment was also up during June in both Iroquois and Edgar counties. In Edgar County the unemployment rate had been 3.6 percent in May but climbed to 4.7 percent in June. And in Iroquois County the jobless rate of 4.7 percent for June is up from 3.8 percent in May.
