Strong thunderstorms marched across central Illinois and into west-central Indiana this (Thursday) afternoon (August 12, 2021). The National Weather Service issued Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for part of our area – including one for Vermilion County that expired at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
Flash Flood Warnings were issued at mid-afternoon Thursday for Champaign, DeWitt and Piatt counties. As the system headed into our area the National Weather Service warned it could be accompanied by wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour and pea-sized hail.
Motorists were alerted not to drive into flood water that might be running across a road. Turn around…Don’t drown. It only takes a small amount of rushing water to wash your vehicle off the road.
More showers and thunderstorms are possible tonight through Friday night, but Saturday is expected to be sunny with a high near 80.
