Week two of high school football is upon us, but some COVID troubles are brewing in Danville High School’s Big-12 Conference. Urbana has cancelled varsity football for this season. DHS Athletic Director Mark Bacys says the hope this year was to get substantial students back into extracurriculars and wanting to participate. But for Urbana, the turnout wasn’t strong enough at the varsity level to overcome a couple problems.
AUDIO: And unfortunately for Urbana’s sake, they just didn’t have the kids come out this year. They’re gonna play JV football this year, they’re gonna have this core group of kids. They’re going to continue to build on that, is the hope, and our conference’s hope as well. We’re all better when it’s a full conference.
Bacys says that so far with Danville’s program, things are going well.
AUDIO: We’ve been fortunate to this point that the players and the coaches are following all the protocols that are in place. Knock on wood, we haven’t had COVID issues come up that would affect the team. We did last year, and that’s I think everybody’s hope this year to get through the year safely, let the protocols be what they are, and hopefully they all work.
Also in the Big-12, Champaign Central and Centennial High Schools have both cancelled their Homecoming activities. Danville plays at Centennial this Friday night.
