After reporting three new COVID deaths Wednesday evening, the Vermilion County Health Department is reporting three additional COVID-related deaths as of Thursday evening. All six recent deaths are females. The ages for the three new deaths reported as of Thursday were in the 40s, 60s, and 70s ranges. Vermilion County’s death total since the start of the pandemic is now 171.
The Health Department is also reporting, as of Thursday evening, 128 new cases of COVID. Of these 128 new cases, more than half, 67, are under the age of 20.
The latest 128 cases included 28 teens, 25 grade-school-aged children, four pre-schoolers, one toddler, and nine infants.
This follows the new cases reported Wednesday, which included six infants, three toddlers, seven pre-schoolers, twenty grade school children, and 26 teenagers.
Health Department spokesperson Douglas Toole says a lot more testing is being done right now with the start of the school year, but it remains to be seen if that’s the top factor in the number of youth cases.
AUDIO: Some folks are testing more to go back to school, some because their extracurriculars are being tested. We are certainly hearing of some student athletes who need a negative COVID test prior to certain competitions.
Of the 128 new cases, none reported being already fully vaccinated. The Health Department also says they are aware of seven Vermilion County residents who have become RE-infected with COVID since the first of June.
The Vermilion County Health Department continues to encourage the community to get vaccinated, and to remember that due to the county’s high transmission status, everyone, regardless of vaccination status, should wear a mask while indoors.
