A Danville City Council committee is backing plans to study the city’s fire stations and a downtown parking garage. City Engineer Sam Cole notes there is currently a ramp that is closed at the parking garage on North Walnut Street…
{AUDIO: ‘’What we are wanting to do is do a kinda parking needs assessment where we say – okay, we’ve got to do something with this parking garage, right? And in order to know we make the right choice with how to move forward – how much parking do we need downtown? Is whatever we do with this thing going to negatively or positively impact that? And what are our options for kind of re-use or retro-fitting this thing.}
In addition, Cole outlined plans for a fire station facilities study. He says the goal is not to rush into anything…
{AUDIO – ‘’We want to do a needs assessment of this. Assess, are these in the right locations? Are there things that have changed about our community that would – you know. And then compare costs of – do you build a new one? Do you modify this station? Does it just need basic upgrades? And then we can budget for those things in the future.’’}
Part of the fire station study would focus on what to do about the training tower located behind station 3 on North Griffin Street. It needs repairs or replaced and is currently not being totally used because of its condition.
The Public Works Committee of the City Council voted last night to recommend the full city council proceed with both studies.
