Westville High School’s football team is prepping for its first game on a new turf surface Friday night (October 1, 2021) when it takes on the Oakwood Comets. The team has even been playing what would have been home games on the road while construction of a new $9-million dollar sports complex has been underway. Westville High Principal and football coach Guy Goodlove describes what’s included…
(AUDIO: ”Turf football field, all-weather track, brand new bleachers, press boxes – you’ve got a press box for the home team (and) a press box for the visitor’s team. You got turf softball, turf baseball, and then we have a sports complex building which will house a practice area for wrestlers, softball-baseball batting cages, an athletic weight room, home and away locker rooms, a concession stand, a ticket booth, and of course bathrooms for the facility. So it’s a complete makeover,”)
Friday is Homecoming at Westville and Goodlove says the team is excited about finally getting back home….
(AUDIO: ”It’s fantastic. You know our guys have been on the road so long that on the way home they would sing John Denver’s old song ‘Take Me Home Country Road’. We came home from Hoopeston last Friday and by that time they learned all the words to the song. So they’re excited. But you know what? We never complained. We knew the situation. We knew it would be worth the wait – and just hang in there. And all that wait is going to pay off Friday night.”)
(The new scoreboard will display digital messages during games.)
The ‘home’ crowd will now sit on the north side of the football field, with visitors on the south. Friday’s Inaugural Game at Memorial Field will be the first football game at Westville High School since the fall of 2019. It starts at 7:00 p.m.
