The Danville City Council is looking to the future as far as what should the residency rules be? During Tuesday night’s meeting, an item was tabled, after it had already been adjusted. Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr was asking that non-union employees would be able to live within 45 miles of city limits. (For union employees, it would depend on future negotiations.)
Mayor Williams says the idea is, one, have greater access to more people that can fill city jobs, and two, keep them less than an hour away so they could make their way in quickly in case of emergency. First, the proposal was amended to have no mention of a possible fee that out-of-town employees would have to pay. But after that, the entire item was tabled until the next full City Council meeting, because there was substantial opinion that the entire topic needed more discussion. Mayor Williams says, he believes they’ll find a solution soon.
AUDIO: Probably it’ll just take a little bit more discussion before we get there. There are two questions. Number One: Do they want to allow City of Danville employees to live up to 45 miles outside of the City of Danville. (That’s) Number One. And then, Number Two: Are they willing to waive the fee, or eliminate the fee, to allow employees to do so.
The next full Danville City Council meeting is Tuesday, October 19th.
