Some vandalism reported over the weekend at Danville’s Garfield and Winter Parks has brought about some more thought about a possible new program. Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr says, the damage was definitely a bad sign.
AUDIO: It’s really frustrating to complete projects that improve the quality of life, only to have folks who have no regard for anyone else destroy them. Yes, it’s absolutely infuriating.
The mayor says, see something, hear something, know something, say something; contact police if you have information on the vandalism.
Meanwhile, what about being able to track people, and find them when they do something like this, by following their license plates? Mayor Williams says a strategic placing of cameras, is being considered. One question would be, where to put them around town.
AUDIO: I think you’ve seen in other cities that they have implemented these license place readers as a form of camera, and they’ve been very successful. So whenever we see something that works well, we need to consider and evaluate whether or not it would work here. Right now our command staff is looking at this. They’re talking to the officers about “where would be best.” As so we’re hoping to have something to come to the Public Services Committee here within a couple of weeks.
Yes, this would be an investment with annual upkeep. The mayor says the question will be what price to put on public safety, and on solving and preventing these types of crimes.
