A big item on the Danville City Council Public Services Committee Meeting Tuesday evening will be a proposed adjustment in the police department budget for the purchase and installation of 30 license plate reader cameras around the city. The idea is to track vehicles used in various crimes, and Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr. spoke about this after extensive vandalism was done to two Danville park sites a couple of weekends ago. The mayor says he’s been letting people know the police department is looking into this, and the feedback has been positive.
AUDIO: I had a meeting recently with some pastors and other city leaders, and that’s one of the things that they mentioned. So the answer is yes, absolutely, the public thinks that this would be a great idea, and I haven’t heard any negative feedback about it at all.
The proposed deal for the cameras would be with Fleet Safety, with an initial installation cost of about 85-thousand dollars, and an annual operations cost of about 77-thousand dollars. Tuesday night’s Public Services Committee meeting is set for 6 PM.
