The Danville School District 118 Board has made plans for the destruction of Cannon School, at an estimated cost of $475,000. Located at 1202 East Main, Cannon School was declared unsafe for occupancy in 2015, and since it has been unoccupied only one property/casualty insurance provider has been willing to provide coverage.
Superintendent Dr. Alicia Geddes says there is no date for this at this point, as various preparation work needs to be done first.
Meanwhile, the District 118 Board plans to make a decision in the future on the fate of Garfield School, at 1101 North Gilbert.
At the presentation by the Building and Grounds Staff during this past Wednesday’s board meeting, it was stated that updated costs at Garfield to replace windows, plumbing; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, and to comply with updated code requirements; are projected at 13 million dollars. Dr. Geddes says administration and the District 118 Board have a lot to look at, such as if Garfield were to be torn down, what is the best way to relocate its current just under 200 students.
AUDIO: So we will go back to the drawing board and see how we can better reallocate the staff and students, take some pressure off maybe Mark Denman. And once we have that information, then we’ll come back to the Board of Education, present it, and then they will make a decision.
Most of this past Wednesday’s presentation by Building and Grounds concerned how the district plans to spend ESSER money it will be receiving to help school districts address the impacts of COVID. There are numerous plans at various buildings, as well as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning improvements planned for the entire district. Please click here for more information:
