This week’s IYW nominee brings us to Rossville. Mrs. Sherry Decker was born and raised in the country on a farm along with her 9 siblings and mother and father. “I love our communities; the small community that will jump in and help wherever it’s needed.” Sherry did just that: She saw a need in the community, and fulfilled it. She, along with her sisters, began Twisted Sisters; a resale shop that doesn’t just “resale”. She gives away most of her inventory for free. The idea started with prom dresses. People who cannot afford a prom dress are invited to come to the shop to choose one. “Dresses are so expensive!” Sherry said. “People come in all the time to get dresses; all year round. I have at least 700 dresses on hand.”Dresses turned into clothing which eventually also became furniture and household items. The shop started in late 2010, opening in 2011, and now is over 4000 square feet and 4 buildings combined. Through her expansion, Sherry was able to furnish 10 Veteran homes in Danville. She says she gets to experience some really great stories and moments in her shop. She recalled a family with children who never got to go shopping before… this was their very first time, and they left with seven outfits each at no charge. She also receives many phone calls from local schools with needs she will always fill if she can. “If I don’t have it, and I post it on FaceBook, someone always comes up with it! People here are always helping each other.”When asked why she gives so much away at no charge: “Because I can.”Thank you, Sherry Decker, for being another great example of positivity in Vermilion County.
