Calvin was born and raised in Danville and he spent his life living and giving in this community. A Danville High School Graduate in 1990, he went on to work at Quaker Oats for nearly two decades until his health began to decline. On September 8, 2021, Calvin passed away at age 48, but his love and legacy live on. Calvin was a father to three children, but he invested in hundreds more.
Calvin used his spare time to volunteer with the youth in Danville through his role as a coach of the Tilton Panthers, and then in 2006 he went on to be a founding member of Carver Park Bears football league. In 2010, the league changed its name to the Danville Bears where Calvin coached over 200 kids, eventually became the franchise owner, and ran the program. Through his leadership, the league had the opportunity to travel to Texas, Louisville, Kansas City, St. Louis, Atlanta, and San Antonio for national tournaments.

His cousin and friend, JR Scruggs, describes Calvin as “incredibly generous… He would always donate cleats and school supplies to the athletes who could not afford them.” Calvin would also scholarship the kids that could not pay the football league fees on a regular basis. JR recalls a time when Calvin discovered that one of the team members was sleeping on the floor, and so he personally purchased their family mattresses and filled their refrigerator. Calvin was invested in the kids not only as athletes, but as people making sure they were cared for and helping them evolve by learning about leadership, education, and the importance of giving back.
Those who love Calvin describe him as the best dressed at every occasion. He was highly interested in fashion and interior design, and he had a knack for it. He was smart, thoughtful, upfront, compassionate, competitive, funny, and generous. Calvin used his bright light to bring light into the lives of others. Thank you, Calvin, for giving back to your hometown. You live on through the lives that you touched and the youth that you invested in who are the future of our community.
