The Danville City Council continues to try and find the right approach for campers and RVs parked at homes, as well as residents who refuse to put garbage toters away.
An updated draft on rules concerning the parking of campers and RVs was voted down by the Public Services Committee Tuesday night, meaning it goes to the next City Council meeting without recommendation. Mayor Ricky Williams, Jr says the updated version did take away residents being able to park campers and RVs in their driveways year ‘round. But questions remain on parking them alongside houses, AND whether they could have them in the driveway for a day for two for preparation and clean-up before and after a weekend outing or vacation.
AUDIO: They can be put on the side of the houses currently, if they’re on a hard surface. So that wouldn’t change. What we were looking at is possibly allowing people to park in their driveways. Not perpetually, but for a small amount of time. That way they can prepare their campers and unload their campers. I hope that we can come up with some kind of compromise that would help us support our citizens, but also maintaining safety.
As for fines for leaving toters out, that updated rule was recently sent back to the Public Works Committee by the full City Council for more fine-tuning. Mayor Williams says, it would be nice to not have this problem at all. But residents’ concerns must be addressed.
AUDIO: We just have to protect our citizens. This is not a matter of money. I would rather never have anyone’s money for this. But what I want is for my neighbor, people and neighborhoods, not to have to have their houses and their yards and their streets look like a dump because some people are inconsiderate enough not to retrieve their trash cans.
The next full Danville City Council meeting is Tuesday, December 7th.
