Danville Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr says if it is taken care of before too long, a use could hopefully be found for the downtown Adams Building. During Tuesday night’s Danville City Council combined Public Works and Public Services Committee meeting, the Public Works Committee approved a time and materials contract for protecting the public safety work already done on the vacant building at 139 to 141 North Vermilion. Breese Tower is already marked for demolition, but Mayor Williams says, for now, this building still has potential.
AUDIO: The last five or six years it has changed hands multiple times, and I’ve never received any king of redevelopment plans for that. We’ve had a lot of great reinvestment in downtown, private investment, folks opening new businesses. Our hope is that a private redeveloper would be interested in making that something great, and then maybe the city and/or Downtown Danville could help out in some way.
And yes, during the Public Services Committee part of the meeting, there was more talk about garbage toters, and fines that could be issued if the toters are left out by the street all the time. Proposed adjustments would include: the third violation would be a fine of 100 dollars, 50 if paid within ten days.
Previously, the proposed third violation fine was 250 dollars, which happens to go along with other third violation fines already in the city handbook. Language adjustments would be made in the latter to not include garbage toters. Also, the amount of violations one has would be reset at the start of each year, and it is definitely the landlords that would be fined, since the city has no adequate way to keep track of tenant changes. Mayor Williams says, at next Tuesday’s Danville City Council meeting, this just might finally be taken care of.
AUDIO: There were just a few items that were confusing. And now that we’ve brought clarity to those, I believe we’ll have near if not unanimous support for this. It’s important. People want to have clean neighborhoods. Our aldermen are proud of our neighhoods. Our people are proud of our neighborhoods. And we want them to look good and also be safe.
Also scheduled for next Tuesday’s Danville City Council meeting is a vote on the new budget.
