New unemployment figures, released just before Christmas, show an improving jobs picture in our area. The report shows Vermilion County’s unemployment rate fell from 5.1 percent in October to 4.9 percent in November. And Danville’s jobless rate, which had been 6.5 percent in October, was 6.1 percent in November. A year ago in October the Danville jobless rate was 8.9 percent.
The new report released just before Christmas shows non-farm employment increased by 600 in Vermilion County compared to November of 2020. Vermilion County’s manufacturing sector reported a loss of 100 jobs last month when compared to the figure a year ago. Other sectors in the Vermilion County jobs report showed improvement.
The Professional-Business Services category gained 200 jobs over the year (comparing November 2021 figures to this November). There were 100 more people working in Vermilion County last month in the Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities sector, as well as the Government Sector compared to a year ago. The Wholesale Trade category, Leisure-Hospitality sector and Other Services also gained 100 jobs each compared to November of last year. The figures have not been seasonally adjusted.
In Champaign, the November 2021 unemployment rate of 3.3 percent is down from 3.6 percent in October. Urbana’s unemployment rate last month (November 2021) was 3.2 percent. It had been 3.8 percent in October.
