Technology is allowing Danville Police to begin 2022 with some new options in the battle against crime. Strategically placed license plate readers and cameras are now located around the city.
Police Chief Christopher Yates discussed the new LPR’s (License Plate Readers) during an interview with VermilionCountyFirst.com News…
(AUDIO: ‘’A lot of people believe that this has to do with traffic enforcement – that’s not the case at all. As a matter of fact it’s not even used for traffic enforcement. As far as the cameras, the license plate readers go, they’re set-up as an investigative tool and also to help us when we are initially responding to calls. And we set it up to where it’s quite the matrix that’s going to assist our investigators as well as our guys on the street in patrol.’’)
Chief Yates adds the newly-installed equipment is already being used…
(They’re operational. We are right now – this week – in the process of being able to bring in and utilize the data. So they are operational. They are collecting data, but right now it’s the human training side of it and being able to bring that and apply it to our everyday work.’’)
Some other central Illinois and Indiana cities have already started using the license plate readers and cameras.
