At the initiative of Mayor Rickey Williams, Jr; the Danville City Council will now begin the process of readjusting the city’s liquor license system. Mayor Williams says, this is something he had targeted for fine-tuning, since right before he became mayor.
AUDIO: Probably within a couple of months of becoming acting mayor, our clerk and deputy clerk both told me that we needed some updates. We made a few that were initially pressing, but in reviewing for this whole gaming issue and possibly increasing those licenses, it became all the more apparent that we really need to make some additional updates to our liquor ordinances.
And yes indeed, the mayor says getting the liquor ordinances updated will help with the gaming license situation.
AUDIO: Fine tuning the liquor licenses would help us to have more control over the gaming licenses as well; because you can only get a gaming license if you have certain classifications of liquor licenses. So they’re kind of interconnected.
Mayor Williams says the first step is going to be looking into three entities that have asked for gaming licenses, which would bring the City of Danville’s total of gaming licenses to 33. After that there would be a moratorium on additional gaming licenses, until the liquor and gaming license ordinances are adjusted. Mayor Williams says the three entities up for the three additional gaming licenses are the Big Easy of Danville at 310 Bryan Avenue, the BP station on South Gilbert Street, and Stroud Liquor on South Gilbert Street.
