A long time ago, the rock band Queen had an album called “A Day at the Races.” Well how about “A NIGHT at the Races?” That’s exactly what CASA of Vermilion and Edgar Counties will be having at Turtle Run on Friday, April 22nd. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. And as advocate coordinator Laura Kasper recently told Tommy B on D102’s “The Big Show,” their mission is to take children who have been hurt, and give them a friend and advocate as their cases go through the legal system.
AUDIO: So we work with abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system, and our advocates speak on behalf of the children’s best interests in court. And we like to say that there’s no other agency in the area that does what we do. We like to meet with the children that we serve once monthly. We visit the foster home. We get to know the child. We build a relationship with them. And then we speak on their behalf in the court system through our court reports. So we make recommendations on what services they may need.
This “A Night at the Races,” event, which CASA of Vermilion and Edgar Counties is bringing back for the first time since 2019, takes new bets on horse races that occurred somewhere in the past.
AUDIO: You are betting on old, virtual horse races. So these old races will be played virtually on projector screens, and you will be given the opportunity to go up and bet on the horse that you think is going to win.
Cost is 15 dollars for the event, ahead of time or at the door. And if you’d like to join the CASA team, the next training sessions begin on June 6th.
