It was last week that we heard from Pastor Wayne Kent, when he spoke to Direct Line’s Greg Taylor and Stephanie Spangler about his time in Poland, viewing their incredible commitment to helping the Ukrainian refugees.
Neuhoff Media’s Brian Byers on sister station WSOY in Decatur recently interviewed Howard G Buffet about his recent trip to Ukraine, and his foundation’s 11 million dollar donation to the World Central Kitchen.
Buffet told Byers that it was a matter of going there to see if they could help. And he felt that to see, it was important to show up. Buffett said calling this a War Against Humanity is exactly right.
AUDIO: And I’d say it on two different levels. I’d say that, in Ukraine, you see them using, you see the Russian soliders using rape as a strategy. And you saw that before in places like Bosnia. They’re using food as a weapon. So they’re cutting off cities. They’re litterally starving to death elderly, children, women.
Taking one of those points further; Buffett says, no doubt about it, one of the top weapons the Russians are using is food. And this effects everyone.
AUDIO: And then you have to go to the global level. Why is it a war against humanity? Because it’s not just what’s happening in Ukraine; but they’re going to create food insecurity in places where we can’t afford it to happen. They’re going to create it in places that are already very destabilized, that will create more conflict, and obviously a lot more people will suffer.
And meanwhile, the after effects, especially the displacement of people, will be felt for years, and most likely generations.
AUDIO: And then the last thing in terms of the global impact is the amount of refugees they’re creating. These people will go somewhere. Some are already on the border here at the United States. It’s a war that has an impact that I don’t think I’ve seen in my lifetime.
Buffett says the connection between Ukraine and Russia is unique, as well as the connection between Ukraine and Poland being unique. While in Ukraine, Buffett sent back a picture, of a 23-year-old young man, with a Polish mother and a Ukrainian father. He was using his passports for each country to take a vehicle back and forth across the border, and had taken hundreds of people across the Polish border to safety.
