Some interesting young people had a role in Thursday Night’s Danville Area Community College Board of Trustees meeting, and two of them are still students at Danville High School. Dr. Dwight Lucus introduced two of his Graphic Design students, taking the course through the College Express program. The mission of their project was to create positive energy to counter all the negativity from the pandemic. So they took their graphic design skills and came up with a very creative and positive facemask. DHS Senior Zane Ross explains.

AUDIO: I knew right away that this is kind of a problem that isn’t really touched on too much to the younger audience of people. For them to be able to allow themselves to express this feeling; to create a positive energy in the times of such a bad pandemic. It was something that I really thought that I can do, and then express my feelings that way.
His fellow senior Samuel Pollard agreed; and said yes, a lot of his fellow DHS students were curious what he was up to.

AUDIO: It showed like, you can actually get a happy vibe through a tough time. They did ask me, “what kind of stuff have I made.” And I showed them some stuff, I showed them this project, and they thought it was pretty cool.
Dr. Lucus says this definitely shows what graphic design can do.
AUDIO: It’s an example how art and graphic design can just be used as tools to let the students express themselves, and then just affect society around them. That’s mainly what graphic design is about, having a positive impact on society.
For next fall, Ross has plans to attend DACC, Pollard plans to go to Millikin University in Decatur, and Dr. Lucus will soon be relocating to the Chicago South Suburbs.
Meanwhile, DACC student and Computer Science major Olivia Logue from the Armstrong area was sworn in as the DACC Board Student Trustee. She admitted that she became interested, after a couple people spoke with her.

AUDIO: Kathy, my Computer Science teacher, she asked me if I wanted to do it, and I wasn’t too sure. But then Dylan, who’s a family friend, he said I should do it. And I thought, “why not, it’ll be good experience.”
Olivia Logue is replacing Laura Duncan, whose one-year term as Student Trustee recently ended.
