The Danville City Council has tabled a vote on pay raises for the mayor, city treasurer, and elected aldermen until July 19th. The plan, proposed by Vice-Mayor Bob Iverson, had called for the mayor’s salary, after the next municipal election, to increase from $75,000 to $95,000; and then eventually up to $125,000 in May of 2026. The treasurer would initially increase to $50,000, and then eventually to $65,000 in 2026. Pay for aldermen would jump from $225 monthly to $300 monthly in the spring of 2023, for the newly elected.
Alderwoman Tricia Teague raised concern that the mayor’s salary does need the initial increase to $95,000, but perhaps no more than that; while alderman pay should perhaps go up even more, because it’s hardly been touched since Danville went to an aldermanic form of government in the late 80s.
Audio PlayerAUDIO: If you look at what was being proposed for the mayor, it was a $20,000 increase initially, and then a $10,000 increase every year (through 2026), which is a significant amount. You’re looking at once you got to the $95,000; and you got up to $125,000 in just four years; you’re talking about around a ten percent increase every year. That just doesn’t typically happen with most peoples’ raises on their normal jobs.
At the suggestion of Alderwoman Sharon Pickering, Teague and Iverson will work together on an adjusted plan, with the intention to have the July 19th vote.
Meanwhile, action approved by the Public Works committee last week was approved by the full council. This included pre-engineering work to the improvements on Boiling Springs Road, the $76,000 contract for a complete assessment of Danville fire stations, and $63,000 for assistance from the Farnsworth Group with preparations for the tearing down of Bresee Tower.
