As the tear down of Cannon School on Main Street continues, the discovery of a time capsule in the cornerstone on Wednesday just may be a window to 100 years ago. Former student Alice Pollock has spent some time on the scene each day.
AUDIO: Since it was actually in the cornerstone itself, and the cornerstone was dated 1922-23, that’s what we believe as far as the year. And we assume that they were putting something of historic value to us now from that time period.

District 118 Buildings and Grounds Director Skip Truex says, they thought a time capsule might be there, but were not 100 percent completely sure.

Cannon School tear down, weather permitting, should last until July 22nd.
AUDIO: There was some thought that there would be a time capsule in that building. And most of the time they’re in a cornerstone or somewhere in the neighborhood. So when they pulled the cornerstone out, it wasn’t really a surprise that there was a time capsule there. It was kind of expected.

As for what happens next, Pollock is hoping that the contents are unveiled in some kind of public forum, so all can enjoy the moment.
AUDIO: I really hope that they will do it publicly so we can all see. Because if it’s really something major that they put in there that’s of great significance historically for the community, I think it would be wonderful.
District 118 has stated that the tear down of Cannon School should last until around July 22nd, with fencing staying up after that for clean-up and back fill.
