For the second straight year, the Danville American Legion Post 210 Junior Speakers team, the 17 and under ballclub, has won the state championship. Coach Steve Waller’s boys pulled it out on Sunday in the Metro-East area down near St Louis, with a 6-5 win over Trenton on Trenton’s home field. Cade Schaumburg was the winning pitcher and had two hits, Pedro Rangel scored the winning run. Coach Waller said afterwards, it was quite a challenge winning the title on the road.
AUDIO: (I told them) if we keep playing it the same way we’ve been playing it all year, things will eventually fall our way. The top half of the 7th, when we had a couple of blunders, and then we were able to double the kid off 2nd. I think that turned the tide for us to get out of that inning without giving up any runs. I think most of the town of Trenton was here. They rallied behind them. Give them credit, Trenton’s got a great team, a great fan base; and made it real difficult on us.
The Danville American Legion Post 210 Junior Speakers finished the season 30-5, with seven players who were also part of last year’s state championship.
