This busy weekend includes Saturday’s Uncle Joe Cannon Base Ball Jamboree at Kennekuk Cove Park. The Vermilion Volves are welcoming three teams to town for seven inning historical old time base ball matches, mid-1800s style. As we’ve mentioned before, former Neuhoff stations news reporter Jim Knoblauch got the Vermilion Voles started about 2003, after he organized a match at Danville Stadium between Indianapolis and Decatur clubs. Some of the same rules, but no ball gloves, and back then base ball was two words. Knoblauch tells us who the Voles guests will be.
AUDIO: We got a team from Hobart, Indiana; the Deep River Grinders. We’ve got the Quarrymen from Lemont, Illinois; a suburb of Chicago, coming down to play. And we also have the Springfield Long Nine from the state capital that are coming over to play. So it should be a fun day.
Just come in the main Kennekuk Cove Park entrance off Henning Road, follow signs for two miles-plus to the fields, right across from the parking lot for the Lake Mingo Boat access area. The matches will begin at noon and continue through the afternoon.
