We are now very much used to the First Fridays events in Downtown Danville. And for August there’s a big bonus, which is happening this weekend. It was 45 years ago this month that we lost Elvis Presley. Memphis has their celebration each year, and Peter Blackmon from the Danville Library Foundation thought, why not get something going here that resembles it?
AUDIO: All about the celebration in Memphis, and creating kind of a big vibe that involves rockabilly and blues, and the food and the fun, and even some Elvis.
And certainly some Elvis entertainment, with a couple of Elvis movies at the Fischer during the day on Saturday starting at Noon; and some special Elvis era music, starting Friday night at the Fischer. As Blackmon explains, it all begins with the one and only Memphis Jones.
AUDIO: He’s coming to play Friday night with his friend, local artist John Jansky. And then on Saturday at the Fischer, there’s a couple of movies; Blue Hawaii and Viva Las Vegas. Saturday night we’ve got Joe Elvis Tirrito playing with his big band. His opener will be the Royal Hounds out of Nashville.
Now there will also be some free music during the day Saturday at Temple Plaza. And of course, Saturday morning at 10 AM is the “Hunka Hunka Burning’ Fat Point-5 K” Elvis Run. Or should we say run with a lot of stops. And as Danville Community Relations Administrator Ashton Greer reminds us, bring your Elvis outfit for that one.
AUDIO: It starts at the library. We ask participants to dress in their best Elvis costume. And then you’re basically going to journey from the library to Temple Plaza, three blocks. And there’s a ton of stops along the way, with different surprises from local businesses. It should be really fun, and it’s only ten dollars to participate.
