State legislators are back in Springfield for the Veto Session starting Tuesday, November 15th. One of the biggest issues is possible adjustments to the Safe-T Act. While the Safe-T Act has actually been in existence for a couple of years, it’s changes to it taking effect this coming New Year’s Day that are causing the most debate. The biggest one is the elimination of cash bail in the state of Illinois, which numerous state’s attorneys and law enforcement personnel are objecting to.
GOP State Rep Mike Marron told us after this past Friday’s Veteran’s Day Ceremony in Danville that as much as he’d like to see changes in the Safe-T Act, he does not see it happening during the Veto Session.
AUDIO: Especially given the outcome of the election, I think probably the Safe-T Act is going to be what it’s going to be at this point. We’re going to continue to push for changes.
Marron says those changes will probably come in court, with a consolidated case involving numerous Illinois state’s attorneys due to be heard next month.
AUDIO: I think the best course that we have right now is the legal battle. So yes, hopefully things go our way in court. There will be appeals and everything else all the way to the Supreme Court. But that’s probably our best chance to get some significant changes at this point.
The consolidated case is due to be heard in Kankakee County on December 7th.
