A tradition begun in Danville just a handful of years ago has once again returned. “The Giving Fence” is back at the Education Personnel Federal Credit Union branch, 101 West Main Street on the northwest corner of Main and Walnut, and it’s designed to keep people warm this winter. Just hang any jacket or winter item you no longer need on the west side fence, and those in need can pick them up at the fence whenever they like. As Education Personnel CU CEO Hope Garrett points out, they picked up this idea a few years back from something happening up in Bloomington.
AUDIO: Somebody was running a ‘giving fence,’ and my marketing person at the time saw that and said, “We really need to do that here.” We had recently acquired that facility, and we knew it was a prime location for people to see these coats as they’re going by. We’re not really involved. We don’t try to evaluate need. We just allow the community to kind of manage that.
Garrett says this always begins right about when the cold weather hits, and usually lasts well into February. It’s no surprise that much of the donations along the fence happen right after early winter cleaning out of closets, or after Christmas.
